SEOUL, KOREA – Revelations by NSA contractor Edward Snowden of a program called Prism to sift data from US web companies have raised fears over online privacy in parts of Asia as well. Whatever the truth, the reliance of Asian officials on e-mail services, offered by US web giants like Yahoo Inc and Google, highlights how vulnerable they are to eavesdropping, according to Reuter.
Government and security officials in parts of Asia have been sending sensitive information and policy documents via Yahoo or Google e-mail services, and concerns are spreading that these may have been monitored and collected by the National Security Agency (NSA), Reuter reported.
The official name cards of several directors at Indonesia's ministry of foreign affairs, for example, give only Yahoo or Gmail addresses. Gatot S. Dewa Broto, spokesman for Indonesia's Ministry of Communications and Informatics, acknowledged that officials had long been aware that public e-mail addresses were "prone to trespassing" but said it was hard to enforce use of official e-mail accounts, according to Reuter.
In parts of Asia, some have little choice but to use personal e-mail addresses for official business. Some ministries and agencies have no domain of their own, while those that do are poorly serviced or cannot be accessed via smartphones, officials say.
Some countries, however, are firm in applying rules. In Singapore, senior officials use separate computers to access the Web and for internal communications. Spokesmen at Japan's foreign and defense ministries said transmitting work-related information through web-based e-mail services was strictly prohibited, Reuter reported.

아시아 "G메일 안 쓸수도 없고"…美 정보수집 논란 확산
미국 국가안보국(NSA)이 프리즘(Prism) 프로젝트로 아시아 지역 정보를 수집했을 것으로 관측되면서 각국 정부에 비상이 걸렸다. 이날 미국 정부는 수십건의 테러를 막았다고 의기양양했지만 표적이 된 아시아 국가 표정은 밝지 않다.
13일 로이터는 구글•야후 등 미국 IT기업의 이메일 서비스를 사용하는 아시아 지역 정부•정보기관이 NSA의 정보 수집 대상이라는 우려가 확산됐다고 보도했다. 로이터는 “에드워드 스노우든의 폭로를 NSA와 기업 양측이 부인했지만 한 가지 확실한 것은 미국 기업 메일을 사용하는 아시아의 정부기관이 보안에 취약하단 사실”이라고 지적했다.
명함에 표기하는 공식 이메일로 G메일이나 야후 메일을 사용하는 인도네시아 외무부는 심각함을 감추지 못했다. 인도네시아 외무부 대변인은 “정보 유출 가능성을 우려했지만 내부용 이메일을 강요할 수만은 없었다”며 “사진을 포함한 대용량 이메일을 주고받기 위해 미국 기업의 이메일을 사용해야 했다”고 설명했다. 태국 정부도 상황은 마찬가지다.
자카르타의 한 보안 컨설턴트는 “아시아태평양 지역 정부 관계자들은 자체 계정으로 대용량 메일을 받지 못할 수 있다며 G메일이나 야후 메일로 보내달라고 요구한다”고 부연했다. 열악한 IT 인프라를 가진 국가 정보가 대거 노출될 수밖에 없다는 정황이다.
일부 국가는 미리 대처했다. 싱가포르의 고위 정부 관계자들은 인터넷 접속과 내부 통신망을 쓰는 PC를 따로 쓴다. 일본 외부•국방 기관은 일과 관련된 정보를 웹 기반 이메일로 주고받지 못하게 금지한다. 마사루 사토 외무부 국제 언론 대변인은 “직원의 G메일과 야후 메일 사용은 엄격히 금지한다”고 말했다.
인도 정부는 내부 정보전달용으로는 정부 메일을 사용하고 언론 등과 소통할 때만 상용 이메일을 사용한다. 인도 정부 관계자는 “설령 미국에서 봐도 관계없다”며 “G메일로 보내는 정보는 세상이 알았으면 하는 내용”이라고 말했다.
