SEOUL, KOREA –South Korean scientists’ profile in the global robotic industry has been gradually raised. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on Thursday announced six teams that passed the Track A (a disaster-zone robot competition) of the DARPA Robotics Challenge (a prize competition funded by DARPA, the most prominent research organization of the United States Department of Defense).
Two of the six teams, chosen to compete in December of next year in the final trials for the DARPA Robotics Challenge, are led by South Korean scientists. A robot named THOR (Tactical Hazardous Operations Robot), developed by professor Dennis Hong of Virginia Tech, professor Dan Lee of Pennsylvania University, professor Mark Lim and South Korean company Robotis, is viewed as one of the strongest contestants. The other “DRC-Hubo Team,” headed up by Professor Paul Oh, uses the humanoid HUBO platform developed by KAIST.
The DARPA Robotics Challenge, aimed to develop robots that can be dispatched to disaster zones like Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster, is broken into three tracks: A,B and C.

한국인 로봇 과학자들, 미국을 깜짝 놀라게 하다
세계 로봇산업계에서 한국인 과학자의 위상이 점차 높아지고 있다.
미국 방위고등연구계획국(DARPA)은 11일(현지시각) 재난구조용 로봇대회 트랙A를 통과한 6개팀을 발표했다.
세계에서 뽑힌 6개 프로젝트 중 2개 팀을 한국인 과학자들이 이끌고 있다. 토르팀은 데니스 홍 버지니아공대 교수와 댄 리 펜실베이니아대학 교수, 마크 임 교수 등 한국계 과학자와 국내 기업 로보티즈가 주축이다. 토르팀은 이번 대회에서 강력한 우승후보로 꼽힌다.
디알시-휴보팀은 한국계 폴 오 교수가 이끌고 있다. 이 팀은 KAIST가 개발한 휴머노이드 휴보를 플랫폼으로 사용한다.
다르파(DARPA) 로봇 챌린지로 불리는 이 대회는 후쿠시마 원전 사태 같은 재난상황에서 인간 대신 임무를 수행할 로봇을 개발하는 것을 목표로 열린다. 수년간 진행되는 동안 트랙 A•B•C 세 단계를 거쳐 최종 우승팀을 뽑는다. DARPA는 지난 10월 세계에서 7개 팀을 뽑아 초기 연구비를 지원했다. 이번 트랙A 테스트에서 1개 팀이 탈락했다. 통과한 6팀은 내년 12월 열리는 실제 임무 수행 대회에 참가할 수 있다.
DARPA는 군사•재난 등 특수임무뿐 아니라 실생활에 쓸 수 있는 기술 개발 발굴에도 큰 역할을 하고 있다. 구글 무인자동차•내비게이션•자동주차 시스템 등 지능형 기술을 개발하는 데 DARPA가 큰 역할을 담당했다.
김병수 로보티즈 사장은 “아직 국내 로봇산업이 선진국에 비해 뒤져 있지만 기술력만큼은 세계적인 수준이라는 게 입증됐다”며 “혁신적인 기술을 적극 개발해 향후 열릴 로봇 시장을 준비해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다.
