SEOUL, KOREA – South Korea-based battery pack provider Pro-Power said Sunday that its ESSs (energy storage systems) will be supplied to the wireless communications base stations of KDDI, Japan’s second largest wireless carrier.
KDDI struck a partnership with Pro-Power in order to replace UPS (uninterruptible power supply) equipment installed in its base stations nationwide with ESSs. Pro-Power will set up 130㎾h ESSs in each of KDDI’s three base stations in Tokyo. KDDI said that since an additional 60 base stations have to install ESSs, additional orders for Pro-Power’s ESSs are highly likely to be placed in the future.
KDDI has been pushing for replacing UPS (based on lead storage batteries) with ESSs based on lithium ion secondary batteries so as to lengthen battery lifespan and reduce disposal costs.
Founded in 1994, Pro-Power, which has been supplying mobile phone batteries to Sony, Kyocera, BlackBerry and Motorola, has recently entered the electric scooter battery and ESS markets.

일본 이통통신 인프라에 국산 ESS 투입된다
일본 이동통신 인프라 비상전력 공급장치로 국산 에너지저장장치(ESS)가 적용된다.
배터리 팩 전문업체인 프로파워(대표 고병욱)는 일본 2위 이동통신사 KDDI의 무선통신기지국에 ESS를 공급했다고 14일 밝혔다.
KDDI는 일본 전역에서 운영하는 기지국의 무정전전원공급장치(UPS)를 ESS로 교체할 목적으로 프로파워와 협력 관계를 구축했다. 프로파워는 도쿄 토라노몬 지역 통신기지국에 130㎾h급의 ESS 구축을 시작으로 도쿄 지역 두 곳의 기지국에도 동일한 설비를 구축할 계획이다. KDDI는 향후 기지국 60여곳에 ESS 구축을 앞두고 있어 프로파워의 추가공급이 유력하다고 회사 측은 설명했다.
KDDI는 기존 납축전지를 적용한 UPS를 운영해오다 배터리 수명과 폐기 비용 부담 등 단점 때문에 리튬이온 이차전지 ESS로 전면 교체를 추진 중이다.
프로파워 ESS는 25개 모듈 팩이 병렬로 연결돼 최대 5000Ah 출력과 모듈 추가로 자유로운 용량 확장도 가능하다. 파우치 타입 국산 리튬이온 이차전지를 채택했으며 프로파워의 배터리관리시스템(BMS)과 시스템 패키징 기술로 완성됐다. 또 지진이 잦은 일본의 상황을 고려해 별도 내진설계를 강화했다.
고병욱 사장은 “이번 일본 통신기지국 시장 진출을 발판으로 각종 인증을 획득해 일본의 ESS 조달(SII) 시장과 국내 이동통신 시장에도 진출할 계획”이라며 “일본의 전기자전거•전기스쿠터 업체와도 배터리 솔루션 공급을 추진 중”이라고 말했다.
1994년에 설립한 프로파워는 소니, 블랙베리, 교세라, 모토로라 등에 휴대폰•스마트폰용 배터리 팩을 공급하며 최근 전기스쿠터용 배터리와 ESS 시장에 진출했다.
