SEOUL, KOREA – South Korean President Park Geun-hye, who often makes a statement through her clothing, attended the First Tourism Promotion Meeting, held on Wednesday, with a red jacket on.
Presiding over the meeting, President Park said, “The tourism industry is a good example of a convergence-based, high value-added industry that is cable of creating lots of jobs. I think the tourism industry will serve as one of Korea’s new growth engines.”
“Economic revitalization requires the revitalization of investment. To that end, we need to make strenuous efforts for resuscitating investment. In that sense, I am here with a red jacket on to symbolize the passion we need to work on this issue,” President Park added.
President Park mentioned, “The tourism industry needs to address problems on the field and obstacles to investment in order to create an environment where the creation of new services and products continues on the back of brisk investment. To that end, barriers among government ministries and municipalities should be eliminated.”
President Park also called for the private sector’s foreigner-friendly marketing practices, saying, “No matter how great tourism resources a nation has, if foreign tourists got ripped off or ran into unkind local people, the nation will not become a beloved holiday destination.”

박 대통령 "관광산업 진흥위해 과감한 규제개혁과 제도개선 필수"
패션을 소통 수단으로 활용해 화제를 모으고 있는 박근혜 대통령이 17일 열린 첫 관광진흥확대회의에서 빨간색 재킷 차림으로 등장해 관광산업 활성화 의지를 밝혔다.
박 대통령은 이날 청와대에서 관광진흥확대회의를 주재하면서 “관광산업은 많은 분야가 총체적으로 결합한 대표적 융복합산업이고 많은 일자리 창출이 가능한 고부가 가치 산업”이라며 “관광산업을 우리경제의 중요한 신성장동력으로 생각하고 있다”고 밝혔다.
박 대통령은 빨간색 재킷에 의미를 부여했다. 박 대통령은 “우리 시대에 우리나라뿐만 아니라 가장 중요한 화두가 경제활성화”라며 “이를 위해 무엇보다 투자활성화가 관건이다. 여기에 많은 열정을 불어넣어야 한다는 생각에서 오늘도 빨간색 옷을 입고 나왔다. 저는 이 옷을 `투자활성화복`이라고 부르려 한다”고 말하며 웃었다.
박 대통령은 지난 12일 열린 제2차 무역투자진흥회의에서도 같은 재킷 차림으로 참석해 “경제에 많은 열정을 불어넣어 활력 있게 살려야 한다는 뜻으로 열정의 색깔인 빨간색을 입고 나왔다”고 말해 웃음과 함께 좌중의 박수를 받은 바 있다.
박 대통령이 이 같은 의미를 부여한 빨간색 재킷을 관광진흥회의에서 입은 것은 관광을 제품 수출처럼 새 정부 핵심과제로 삼고 육성 지원해 신성장동력으로 키우겠다는 의지를 천명한 것이라는 청와대 설명이다.
박 대통령은 “관광업계가 현장 애로사항과 투자 걸림돌을 해결해 투자와 새로운 서비스, 상품이 끊임없이 창출될 수 있는 환경을 만들어야 한다”며 “이와 관련해 중요한 것이 칸막이 없는 협업”이라고 강조했다.
박 대통령은 “관광산업은 융합적 특성이 강하기 때문에 부처나 지자체 사이에 칸막이가 있으면 제대로 키워내기 어렵다”며 “문화체육관광부가 주무부처이지만 자연친화적 관광은 환경부, 의료관광은 복지부, 해양크루즈관광은 해양수산부, 관광객 입국문제는 법무부와 안전행정부 등 수많은 부처와 지자체가 긴밀하게 연관돼 있다”고 지적했다.
바가지요금 근절 등 민간 노력도 당부했다. 박 대통령은 “악마는 디테일에 있다는 말이 있다. 아무리 좋은 관광자원이 있어도 바가지나 불친절 등으로 관광객이 불쾌감을 느낀다면 좋은 관광지가 되지 못할 것”이라며 “외국 관광객이 우리나라를 다시 찾고 싶은 나라로 만들 수 있도록 정부와 민간이 손잡고 노력해 주기 바란다”고 말했다.
