SEOUL, KOREA – LG Electronics has ranked third by annual market share in the North American smartphone market. According to US market research firm Strategy Analytics (SA), LG Electronics finished 3rd with a 7.1% market share (in terms of supply) in 2012, after Apple (37.6%) and Samsung Electronics (26.6%).
LG Electronics has continued to stay on an upward trajectory, ranking 7th in 2009, 6th in 2010 and 5th in 2011. Last year, LG Electronics beat out both HTC and Blackberry.
Such an upturn stems from LG Electronics’ launch of its premium models the Optimus G and the Optimus Vu and numerous models of the 3G L Series.
Besides, LG has raised its brand image by releasing the world’s first VoLTE smartphone, the “LG Connect 4G” and commercializing 4G calls in partnership with MetroPCS, an American mobile phone service provider.
An official from LG Electronics said, “US investment bank Jefferies & Co. and patent consulting firm TechIPm’s rating the value of LG Electronics’ LTE patents as the world’s highest also has had a positive impact on our sales in the US.”

LG, 美 스마트폰 연간 점유율…"상승세 탔네"
LG전자가 스마트폰 사업을 시작한 이후 처음으로 북미 스마트폰 시장 점유율 연간 3위 자리에 올랐다.
미국의 시장조사업체 스트래티지애널리틱스(SA)에 따르면 LG전자는 지난해 연간 기준으로 북미 스마트폰 시장에서 7.1%의 점유율(공급 기준)로 애플(37.6%)과 삼성전자(26.6%)에 이어 3위를 차지했다.
LG전자는 미국에서 2009년 7위, 2010년 6위, 2011년 5위를 기록하며 매년 한 계단씩 순위를 올렸다. 지난해에는 HTC와 블랙베리를 한꺼번에 제쳤다.
이런 성과는 LG전자가 지난해 북미 시장에서 `옵티머스G`와 `옵티머스뷰` 등 프리미엄 스마트폰을 연이어 내놓고 3세대(3G) 스마트폰 L시리즈도 대거 선보인데 따른 것이다.
세계 최초의 VoLTE(음성LTE) 스마트폰 커넥트4G를 출시하고 끊김없는 4G 통화를 메트로PCS를 통해 세계 최초로 상용화한 것도 브랜드 제고에 한몫했다는 평가다.
LG전자 관계자는 “미국 투자은행 제프리스앤코와 특허전문 컨설팅기관 테크아이피엠이 LG전자가 보유한 LTE 특허 가치를 세계 1위로 평가한 것도 판매에 영향을 줬다”고 설명했다.
