SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Electronics will take the wraps off the Exynos 5420, the newest addition to Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa family of eight-core processors, in order to take on the next-generation smart device market.
Samsung Electronics said Tuesday that it will soon unveil the Exynos 5420, equipped with six ARM Mali-T628 MP6 cores.
The updated Exynos 5 Octa doubles the graphics processing power of its previous Exynos 5 Octa processor and supports the latest 3D program commands. It will deliver high-end graphics processing and excellent multi-tasking performance, according to Samsung Electronics.
It is powered by four 1.8GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processors and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 cores, providing 20% more CPU processing than its predecessor. Baked inside is a multiple image compression (MIC) IP block, a feature that results in maximizing the usage hours of mobile devices with a high-resolution display such as WQXGA (2500x1600), in particular when browsing the web or doing multimedia application requiring the frequent screen refresh, according to Samsung.
Mass production of the updated Exynos 5 is slated to begin in August.

삼성전자, 엑시노스5 옥타 24일 공개…차세대 스마트 기기 시장 주도 야심
삼성전자가 세계 최고 수준의 그래픽 성능을 자랑하는 엑시노스5 옥타 애플리케이션프로세서(AP)를 공개하고, 차세대 스마트 기기 시장 공략에 나섰다.
삼성전자(대표 권오현)는 ARM의 고성능 그래픽 프로세서 말리 T628 코어를 6개 탑재한 엑시노스5 옥타(제품명 5420)을 선보인다고 23일 밝혔다.
이 제품은 기존 엑시노스보다 그래픽 처리 능력이 두 배 이상 높고, 최신 3D 프로그램 명령어를 지원한다. 3D 그래픽을 정교하게 처리할 수 있으며, 멀티 태스킹 성능도 뛰어나다. 고성능 모바일 게임에 적합할 것으로 보인다.
1.8㎓ 고성능 코어 4개와 1.3㎓ 저전력 코어 4개가 탑재됐다. 기존 제품 대비 데이터 처리 능력을 20% 이상 끌어올렸고, 일반 연산 작업도 지원하는 그래픽 프로세서가 탑재돼 효율적인 작업이 가능하다.
사진, 동영상 등 멀티미디어 데이터를 화면으로 전송할 때 데이터 압축기술 MIC IP를 지원한다. 풀HD급 화질보다 두 배 이상 화소수가 많은 초고해상도 WQXGA(2560x1600)를 구현할 때 소비 전력을 크게 낮출 수 있다.
삼성전자는 이 달 중 연구개발을 마무리하고, 다음 달 양산에 돌입할 계획이다. 24일(한국시간) 미국 애너하임에서 열리는 제40회 국제 컴퓨팅 그래픽 콘퍼런스 `시그래프 2013(SIGGRAPH 2013)`에서 엑시노스5 옥타를 시연한다.
김태훈 삼성전자 시스템LSI사업부 상무는 “풍부한 멀티미디어 그래픽 콘텐츠를 즐기려 하는 스마트폰 사용자에게 새로운 경험을 제공할 것”이라며 “향후 사용자에게 새로운 가치를 제공하고, 고객의 제품 차별화를 가능케 할 반도체 솔루션을 꾸준히 선보일 것”이라고 말했다.
