Seoul, Korea - SK Telecom became the first one among the telecom companies worldwide to start the fastest Wi-Fi service.
SK Telecom announced on Monday that it will start the Giga Wi-Fi service about four times faster than the existing one, starting from the end of this month.
The Giga Wi-Fi has the maximum speed of 1.3Gbps, about four times faster than the currently available 802.11n Wi-Fi service
The new Wi-Fi service adopted Giga Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, established by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which uses three antennas for transmission and reception simultaneously.
The Giga Wi-Fi service had been field-tested at the telecom’s showroom in Seoul since October last year, and a the test-bed was built in T Open Lab, a R&D zone in the company’s Bundang Building in the following month.
The performance of new technology was tested under the various conditions in its show room and R&D zone, for SK Telecom to be able to develop the access point ready for commercial service.
SK Telecom’s plan is to start rolling out the equipment from Seoul Railway Station from the 18th this month and expand the service areas to high data traffic areas nationwide, such as public transportation terminals and landmark buildings.

SK텔레콤은 이달 말 기존 와이파이보다 4배 빠른 기가 와이파이를 상용화한다고 18일 밝혔다.
기가 와이파이는 최고 1.3Gbps 속도로 현재 와이파이(300Mbps, 802.11n방식)보다 약 4배 빠르다.
SK텔레콤은 국제전기전자공학회(IEEE)가 정한 기가 와이파이 표준인 802.11ac 기술을 적용, 3개 안테나를 전파 송수신에 동시에 활용한다.
이에 앞서 SK텔레콤은 지난해 10월 SK텔레콤 복합 매장(T월드 카페 종각점)에 기가 와이파이 체험존을 마련했고 11월에는 분당사옥 내 연구개발 공간인 `T 오픈랩(T Open Lab)`에 테스트베드(Test-bed)를 구축했다.
SK텔레콤은 체험존과 테스트베드 운영으로 와이파이 혼재 상황 등 다양한 환경에서 성능 테스트를 진행하고 지난해 말 상용 수준의 AP 개발에 성공했다.
SK텔레콤은 18일부터 서울역을 시작으로 장비 구축에 나서 향후 터미널, 랜드마크 빌딩 등 전국 데이터 트래픽 밀집 지역을 중심으로 서비스 지역을 확대해 나갈 계획이다.
SK텔레콤은 갤럭시S4를 비롯해 오는 4월 이후 출시되는 국산 스마트폰에 기가 와이파이를 순차적으로 탑재할 계획이다.
강종렬 SK텔레콤 네트워크전략본부장은 “기가 와이파이 상용화를 계기로 지속적인 기술 개발로 와이파이 진화 노력을 계속할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.
