SEOUL, KOREA- Samsung Electronics announced on August 5 that it passed the 150-million mark in cumulative production of the compressor, one of core parts for refrigerators.A Company official said, "If having the compressors we have produced so far stand in a row, the length would be long enough to shuttle between Seoul and Busan forty times. The milestone can be achieved only by a handful of home electronics companies specializing in production of compressors."

The compressor is a part that creates chill by compressing refrigerants and circulating them. There are not many companies which produce compressors for themselves, even among those who are engaged in the production of refrigerators.

Compared to the compressors that Samsung Electronics produced in the 1970s, today's models feature a 30-percent reduction in size and a more than two-fold increase in capacity and efficiency, thereby enabling a large 800-liter refrigerator to run without any problem.

In particular, Samsung Electronics developed a high-efficiency digital inverter compressor in 1999, first among Korean companies, that can reduce noise at night and save electricity consumption by 25 percent.
