SEOUL, KOREA- Samsung, SK, and Lotte groups have plunged into a bidding war to establish health care information systems for the Saudi Arabian government. According to industry sources on August 12, Samsung SDS, a Seoul National University Hospital-SK Telecom consortium, and Hyundai Information Technology (a Lotte Group company) had submitted proposals for a Ministry of Health and Welfare-led project to build hospital information systems in Saudi Arabia.

The large-scale project calls for establishing electronic medical record and other state-of-the-art information systems for major hospitals across the Middle Eastern country. Earlier in April, Korean Minister of Health and Welfare Chin Young met his counterpart in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdullah Abdulaziz al Rabeeah, to discuss ways to expand cooperation between the two countries.

The Saudi government is pushing to emulate the whole hospital management system of Korea at the cost of 2.5 trillion won. The hospital information system project is part of this wider program. Whoever wins the project out of the three bidders, it is expected to be the largest-scale order for medical system exports.
