SEOUL, KOREA – Far East University, located in North Chungcheong province, has created the Semiconductor Equipment Engineering Department for the first time in Korea. Good news for the semiconductor equipment industry that has been suffering from a severe labor shortage.
Far East University said Tuesday the first batch of 25 freshmen was admitted to the Semiconductor Equipment Engineering Department, led by Dae-hun Lee who worked for SK Hynix (formerly Hynix Semiconductor) and served as CEO of SCD, a Korean manufacturer of motors.
Its curriculum is divided into theory and hand-on training. For the first three years, students will take courses like physics, material engineering, electromagnetics, electric and electronic circuit experiment and semiconductor manufacturing. In the fourth year, students will join internship programs provided by semiconductor device companies and equipment manufacturers.
In Korea, IDMs (Integrated Device Manufacturer) and fabless companies have so far trained workers for design jobs in-house.
Dae-hun Lee said, “We will produce work-ready individuals packed with the skills required to undertake jobs right away.”

극동대, 국내 처음 반도체장비공학과 신설
국내 처음으로 대학교에 반도체장비공학과가 설립돼 신입생을 맞았다. 소자 산업에 비해 심한 인력난을 겪고 있는 반도체 장비 산업에 윤활유가 될 전망이다.
극동대학교는 올해 반도체장비공학과를 설립하고 신입생 25명을 선발했다고 19일 밝혔다. 지난해 초 하이닉스반도체(현 SK하이닉스) 상무와 모터 제조 업체 에스씨디 대표를 역임했던 이대훈 학과장을 영입했다.
교과과정은 기본 이론과 실무 실습으로 나뉜다. 3년간 물리학•재료공학 같은 기반 지식과 전자기학•전기전자회로실험, 반도체공정 등 이론을 습득한다. 4학년은 교과과정을 유연하게 편성해 직접 반도체 소자 기업이나 장비 업체에 파견돼 인턴십을 수행할 예정이다.
지금까지 국내에서는 종합반도체회사(IDM)나 팹리스 업체가 필요로 하는 설계 인력을 주로 양성해왔다. 공장(팹)에서 장비를 관리하고 유지•보수를 담당할 사람은 부족해 신입사원을 뽑아 기업이 별도로 1~2년 교육을 시켜 활용해왔다. 특히 중소•중견 기업이 포진한 장비 산업에서는 장비•설비•공정 개발 인력을 찾기 어려워 구인난을 겪어왔다.
이대훈 학과장은 “기업에서 별도 업무 교육을 하지 않고 바로 현장에서 일할 수 있는 인력을 배출할 예정”이라며 “인턴십 과정을 강화하기 위해 국내 반도체 업체 여러 곳과 협의하는 건 물론 졸업 전에 취업과 장학제도를 연계한 프로그램도 마련 중”이라고 말했다.
