IFA 2013 Preview: The Expected and the Unexpected

SEOUL, KOREA - It is nearly that time of the year again as IFA 2013 (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin) which is held on September 6 to 11, has consumers aroused from all around the world as the latest gadgets and innovations from major electronic companies around the world will be showcased.

Four topics will be covered at the IFA which are Smart TV & Multimedia, Beyond HTDV, Intelligent Living, and Smart Home. Attendees and electronic admirers all over the world are looking for innovated devices or new products from these topics. Major companies such as Samsung, Levono, HP, Ford, Viewsonic, iRobot, LG, Philips, and other companies are looking forward to showcase their latest gismos.

An exhibition will be held by 1600 companies with the latest electronic products in smartphones, tablets, HDTV, Home Theater, audio, laptops, GPS devices, Wi-Fi gadgets, video games, digital cameras, home appliances and other future digital technologies for work, home and entertainment. Just like every year, rumors are rife over what might be unveiled in Berlin.

Much of the buzz around electronics is primarily generated by smartphones but there are always astonishing electronic innovations and new gadgets that are introduced at the IFA every year and this year, the most anticipated product for majority of the consumers will be the Galaxy Note 3. Samsung Electronics has enjoyed much success on popularizing two previous phablet devices, Galaxy Note I and II and is looking forward to continue its success in introducing the Galaxy Note 3 at the IFA 2013. Furthermore, according to The Korea Times, Samsung is also set to unveil their first smartwatch ‘Galaxy Gear’ at the IFA 2013. Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of the Samsung’s mobile business said that “The Gear won’t have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications.”

Sony will also set to announce a new flagship smartphone, the Honami on September 4th. According to International Business Times, Honami will feature a 20.7 megapixel camera capable of 4K (Ultra HD) video recording. An important component of the Honami will be how the camera should be able to perform very well in low light due to a larger sensor and ISO of up to 12,800.

At the IFA 2012, Sony showed off an Ultra HD television with a very expensive price tag. Since then, Samsung, LG and Sony have brought new Ultra HD TVs for a more reasonable price. As consumers have recently invested in HD and 3D TVs and as the repurchase period for the TV for consumers is quite long, the popularity Ultra HD televisions might not meet expectations of companies. The same could be true for OLED televisions with a heavy price tag, even though the specifications are very impressive.

Every year, LG Electronics delivers a new dimension to improve home entertainment. This year, LG Electronics will unveil a modern, space saving Sound Plate (model LAP340). The company is also showcasing a host of other premium audio visual products at the event, including the highly regarded NB4530A and NB5530A Sound Bars. Some interesting electronics devices from smaller industries will definitely surprise some consumers who will attend the IFA 2013. The unexpected, electronic devices from small and medium industries are looking to make a splash and here is a few that you might want to check out. Korea Komma’s Innovative Small Household Appliances will launch innovative kitchen appliances developed for small-family or single-person households. An interesting product from Korea Komma Inc., would be the KOMMA402 which combines ten kitchen appliances into one.

iCooly, under the motto of “More Useful, More Stylish,” the company develops smart device accessories with practicality and with unique design. With the smartphone market blooming, iCooly’s innovative USD 3.0 Stand Hub enables users to transfer the data faster with four USB ports, and bring users convenience when they are viewing and typing. Unlike major display giants like Samsung and LG, Skymedia Co., is not notoriously known worldwide but it is a reputable TV manufacture in Korea for LED/3D-TV.  Have you ever wondered what it would like to watch 3D TV without the glasses? Well, as an exhibitor at the IFA 2013, Skymedia will show a variety of new product line for zero-bezel 3D LED TV and Real Glasses-free 3D display. Although not much content gets produced in 3D, things might change as Skymedia, will exhibit the advanced glasses-free 3D display at the IFA 2013.

A repercussion of the technological advancement has brought delightful changes to everyday life. One of the offshoots or shall we say consequences of this advancement is how much convenience it has brought to our lifestyles. The standard of convenience changes along with new inventions and innovations and this product might just raise the bar. The five keynote speakers include; Pieter Nota, Executive Vice President of Philips, Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint Corporation, Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company, Turan Erdogan, CEO of Vestel Group, and Colin Angle CEO of iRobot.  

IFA is organized by The German Association for Entertainment and Communications Electronics (gfu) in cooperation with Messe Berlin and is one of the world’s biggest consumer electronic trade fairs.
