SEOUL, KOREA – Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Daewoo International have won an order for a power plant project worth KRW 900 billion from Uzbekistan. Hyundai Engineering & Construction said Wednesday a consortium consisting of Hyundai E&C and Daewoo International clinched a USD 819 million contract to build two power plants in Uzbekistan.
Under the contract with state-owned power generation company Uzbekenergo, Hyundai E&C will build two 450-megawatt combined cycle power plants in Talimarjan, about 440 kilometers southwest of the Uzbek capital Tashkent.
The construction is projected to be completed in 37 months after work begins. Hyundai E&C said the project will be financed by the Asian Development Bank, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency and the Uzbek government.
Hyundai E&C, which had mainly carried out overseas plant construction projects in the Middle East, has pursued market diversification towards CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), Central American and Africa.
“The winning of this deal from Uzbekistan will pave the way for our overseas plant construction business to spread across Central Asia,“ said an official from the consortium.

9000억원 규모 우즈벡 화력발전 사업 수주
현대건설과 대우인터내셔널 컨소시엄이 한화 9000억원에 달하는 우즈베키스탄 복합화력발전소 건설사업을 수주했다.
현대건설은 대우인터내셔널과 함께 우즈벡 국영 전력청으로부터 8억1900만달러의 탈리마잔 복합화력발전소(900㎿) 건설 사업을 수주했다고 20일 밝혔다.
현대건설은 우즈벡의 카르시 인근 탈리마잔 지역에 450㎿급 2기의 복합화력발전소를 건설한다. 설비용량으로는 국내 원전 1기와 맞먹는 양이며, 예상 공사기간은 착공 후 37개월 정도다. 사업 투자금은 아시아개발은행(ADB), 일본국제협력기구(JICA) 및 우즈벡 정부로부터 조달할 예정이다.
현대건설은 중동지역 플랜트 중심의 수주 범위를 넓혀 독립국가연합(CIS), 중남미, 아프리카 등지로 시장다변화를 추진했다. 그 결과 지난 2011년 말 사하라 이남 아프리카 첫 진출에 이어, 2012년 중남미 재진출, 그리고 이번에 우즈벡 첫 진출의 결실을 맺었다.
컨소시엄 관계자는 “우즈벡 사업은 향후 중앙아시아 전역에 한국 발전 사업이 활발히 진출하는 교두보 역할을 할 것”이라고 말했다.
