SEOUL, KOREA- GS Engineering & Construction said on September 23 that it secured a US$3.78-billion deal for the second phase of building petrochemical facilities in Kazakhstan. As the company won the project jointly with Petrofac of the UK and Linde of Germany, its 38-percent share will come to $1,426 million.

The project calls for building petrochemical plants capable of processing 400,000 tons of polyethylene a year on the shores of the Caspian Sea about 1,500 kilometers southwest of the Kazakh capital Astana. GS E&C will be responsible for design, procurement, construction, and pilot operation of polyethylene production facilities and other amenities within 47 months of time.

A GS E&C official said, "The Kazakh project is the fourth order that we won this year in the former Soviet Republics following the Azerbaijani oil refinery project, the Armenian combined cycle power plant, and the Uzbek Surgil integrated gas-to-petrochemical project. This is a meaningful milestone as Kazakhstan is a country with huge potentials."
