Samsung Electronics Develops New Image Sensor Technology

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013
SEOUL, KOREA- Samsung Electronics announced on September 24 that it has developed a new CMOS image sensor (CIS) technology that realizes high-quality image by reducing light loss, for the first time in the industry. The CMOS image sensor is a core semiconductor part that is used widely for digital cameras, smartphones, and rear cameras for cars.

The newly developed ISOCELL technology changes a sensor structure to ensure maximum utilization of the light that is collected at the pixel level. In general, image quality is influenced heavily by the quantity of the light collected at each pixel.

A Samsung official said, “CMOS image sensor using this technology features a 30-percent improvement in full well capacity compared to existing models, thereby enabling users to get clearer image even in a dark environment.”

Samsung Electronics plans to start mass-production of 0.25-inch 8-megapixel CIS chips (S5K4H5YB) that will be applied with this technology, from the fourth quarter of this year.
