SEOUL, KOREA - Which company do you think has achieved the highest growth in the global smartphone market in the third quarter of this year? The correct answer is not Samsung nor Apple but LG Electronics.

LG Electronics sold 12 million smartphones in the third quarter of this year, achieving a robust growth of 71.4 percent compared to 7 million units a year ago. Until two years ago, LG Electronics-made smartphones were not welcomed by consumers in and outside Korea. The company, it was said, failed in making appropriate responses to the shift in the trend of the global mobile phone market toward smartphones.

However, since it developed the Optimus G, LG Electronics has earned good acclaims in terms of the quality of smartphones, corporate brand image and sales volume. During the January-September period of this year, LG Electronics sold 34.4 million smartphones, ranking No. 3 behind Samsung Electronics (233.8 million units) and Apple (102.4 million units).
