Samsung Electronics Applies for Iris Recognition Technology Patent

SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics applied for its iris recognition-related patent, raising expectations that the security technology would be mounted on its next-generation smartphones.

According to the patent information net Kipris, run by the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Samsung Electronics applied for “iris recognition and proximity sensing apparatus” in May 2012.

The company revealed in the patent application that the iris recognition technology digitizes features of iris that is different by person and applies it as a recognition technology for security purposes.

A Samsung official added that the iris has more inherent patterns than the fingerprint.Iris recognition is a non-contact recognition, thereby yielding a less sense of resistance and identifying person accurately even when they wear glasses or contact lenses.
