Korea’s Ramen Market Exceeds 2 Tril. Won Last Year

SEOUL, KOREA - Korea’s ramen market passed the 2-trillion-won mark last year, first in history. This was the first for the nation’s ramen market to break the 2-trillion-won barrier since it was introduced first in 1963. This milestone is achieved in 15 years after the market surpassed 1 trillion won in 1998.

The nation’s ramen market size reached 2.01 trillion won last year, up 1.5 percent from 1.98 trillion won a year ago.Key factors behind the growth of the ramen market last year include the increase in demand for “soupless ramen” and the“Chapaguri” fever. Chapaguri is a new word created by combining “Chapagetti”with “Neoguri.”

Chapagetti,which is a mix of ramen and Chajangmyeon, ranked No. 2 in terms of sales among domestic ramen products, the highest rank in its history, overtaking AnsungTangmyeon.

Ottogi solidified its No. 2 position in the domestic ramen industry, thanks to the popularity of its strategic product “Sesame Ramen” and its aggressive marketing activities.
