SEOUL, KOREA - LG Electronics grabbed a No. 3 spot in the global smartphone sales ranking last year, the highest rank in its history.

According to the analysis of the 2013 sales of smartphone makers worldwide conducted by U.S. market research firm Strategy Analytics, LG Electronics was positioned at No. 3 with sales revenue of US$11.07 billion, right behind Apple and Samsung Electronics. In sales terms, LG Electronics had a global market share of 4.1 percent.

Until last year, LG Electronics had seen its smartphone sales lag behind not only Apple and Samsung Electronics but also HTC, Sony and Black Berry, thereby ranking No. 6.

This was the first time for LG Electronics to pass the $10-billion mark in annual smartphone sales. LG Electronics’ annual smartphone sales have been on an upward trend, rising to $1.99 billion in 2010, $4.95 billion in 2011 and $7.34 billion in 2012.

In terms of sales value, LG Electronics overtook Chinese rivals such as Huawei and Lenovo, although it lagged behind them in terms of sales volume. Huawei, Lenovo and ZTE posted smartphone sales of $3.97 billion, $2.35 billion and $1.81 billion, respectively, last year.
