SEOUL, KOREA – Propped up by the Optimus G’s success, LG Electronics is likely to see its credit rating rise. LG Electronics said Wednesday Standard & Poor's has revised up its outlook on LG from “stable” to “positive.” Standard & Poor's assigns a negative or positive outlook when it believes that the rating may change. A positive outlook is a good leading indicator of an upgrade. Standard & Poor's downgraded LG Electronics’ credit rating by one notch from BBB to BBB- in 2011.
Standard & Poor's said, “LG Electronics’ hardware technologies and vertical integration will gradually improve LG’s competitive edge in the global smartphone market.” And Standard & Poor's predicted that LG would effectively manage operational efficiency and profitability in the home appliance sector and LG Display’s display panel business would maintain sustainable sales performance for the next one year thanks to recovering market demand and growing sales of premium models. Standard & Poor's factors in the performance of LG Electronics’ subsidiaries (LG Display and LG Innotek) as well in deciding on LG Electronics’ credit rating.

LG전자, 옵티머스G 선전으로 신용등급 상향 가능성 커져
옵티머스G` 선전으로 LG전자가 신용등급 상향을 기대하게 됐다.
LG전자는 국제신용평가사 스탠더드앤드푸어스(S&P) 신용등급 전망이 `안정적`에서 `긍정적`으로 상향 조정됐다고 3일 밝혔다.
전망은 신용등급과 별개로 나오는 것으로, 차기 신용등급 평가에 바로 영향을 미친다. 일반적으로 신용등급 상향에 앞서 `긍정적` 신용등급 전망 평가를 받는다. LG전자 신용등급은 BBB-로 2011년 BBB에서 하향됐다.
신용등급 상향 배경엔 스마트폰 실적 개선이 크게 작용했다. S&P측은 “LG전자가 보유한 하드웨어 기술력과 수직계열화로 세계 스마트폰 시장에서의 경쟁력을 점진적으로 개선시켜 나갈 것”이라고 내다봤다. 여기에 디지털 TV, 냉장고, 세탁기, 에어컨 등 소비자 가전부문 영업효율성과 수익성을 효과적으로 관리할 수 있을 것으로 전망했다. LG디스플레이스의 디스플레이 패널 사업도 시장 수요 회복과 프리미엄 제품 매출 증가로 1년간 안정적 영업성과를 예상했다. S&P는 LG전자 자회사인 LG디스플레이와 LG이노텍 실적을 포함해 신용등급을 평가한다.
LG전자 관계자는 “S&P는 매년 한차례 신용등급을 조정한다”며 “내년에 신용등급 상향을 도전하게 될 것”이라고 말했다.
