SEOUL, KOREA - Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are engaged in a price war to get the upper hand in the fast-growing UHD TV market.

LG Electronics announced on April 20 that it sold more than 900 units of UHD TVs in just three weeks after it launched pre-order sales thanks to its aggressive price marketing. LG Electronics released 49-inch UHD TVs at the price of 2.9 million won.

In response, Samsung Electronics also decided to release a string of UHD TVs at the 3-million-won price level starting from the end of this month. UHD is a premium TV whose image quality is four times higher than that of existing full HD TVs.

LG Electronics launched pre-order sales on March 28 for its UHD TV (49-, 55-, and 65-inch models) whose prices were lowered by more than 30 percent compared to those of existing models.

The price of a new 55-inch model, the smallest among existing UD TV models, is set at 3.9 million won, about 33 percent or 2 million won lower than the price of the existing same-sized model set at 5.9 million won. LG also newly introduced a 49-inch model whose price was set at 2.9 million won.
