SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung SDI said Thursday its 5.8kW home ESS (Energy Storage Systems)’s safety has been certified by VDE (Verband Deutscher Elektrotrchniker), one of Europe’s largest technical-scientific associations. Samsung SDI’s 5.8kW home ESS has become the first lithium-ion battery ESS that is adorned with VDE certification. Samsung SDI’s 5.8kW home ESS has already been decked with Japan’s JET certification and the US’ UL certification.
Home ESSs can be installed in households and small buildings to store reserve power or renewable energy in connection with solar power generators. VDE hands out its certification after conducting a wide range of strict tests and rigorous reviews, such as electric and electronic safety tests and assessments on delivery, transport and risks.
“The winning of VDE certification proves that the technological prowess of Samsung SDI’s mid- and large-sized secondary batteries is unrivalled. We will put our VDE-certified batteries on the German market and will further expand our markets in Europe,” said Yeo-Chang Yoon, Executive Director at Samsung SDI.

삼성SDI, 세계 유력인증 '3관왕'…최다 보유
삼성SDI는 유럽 최고의 규격인증기관인 독일전기기술자협회(VDE)로부터 5.8㎾ 가정용 에너지저장장치(ESS)에 대한 안전성 인증을 획득했다고 4일 밝혔다. 리튬이온 2차전지를 채용한 ESS 제품이 VDE 인증에 통과한 것은 이번이 처음이다.
가정용 ESS는 가정이나 소규모 빌딩에 설치해 예비전력 저장용으로 사용하거나 태양광 발전과 연계해 신재생 에너지 저장용으로 사용할 수 있다. VDE는 기본적 전기전자 안전성 테스트 이외에 정상•비정상 환경, 배송•운송, 위험평가 등 다양한 항목에 대한 엄격한 시험과 평가를 거쳐 인증서를 부여한다.
윤여창 삼성SDI 사업부장(상무)은 “이번 VDE 인증은 세계가 삼성SDI 중대형 전지의 독보적인 품질과 기술력을 인정한 쾌거”라며 “이번 인증을 바탕으로 독일 시장에 제품을 출시한 후 유럽 전 지역으로 확대 보급할 계획”이라고 말했다.
