SEOUL, KOREA - The game console market, which was once hit hard by the emergence of smartphones, is now benefiting from them. The sales of PlayStation 4 increased as female and middle-aged consumers who became familiar with games through smartphones are turning their eyes toward more dedicated game devices.
The domestic sales of the PS4 marked a three-to-four fold increase compared to those of its predecessor model PS3. Hanwoori Game CEO Park Sung-Ho said, “The PS4 is now selling faster than the PS2 which has been the most successful game console.”
The global sales of the PS4 exceeded the 7-million mark last month, in just five months after being released. Key factors behind the popularity of the PS4 include the spread of smartphone games. Unlike Sony’s strong performance, Nintendo still remains in a slump, posting losses for three straight years.
