Competition Heats up in Dehumidifier Market

SEOUL, KOREA - A new wind is blowing in Korea’s home electronics market. Once regarded as a seasonal business, the dehumidifier market is growing at a rapid pace as the nation’s climate is changing into semitropical.

The annual sales of dehumidifiers in Korea shot up to 1.5 million units worth 400 billion won in 2013 from only 40,000 units in 2009.Along with the expansion of the dehumidifier market, competition is heating up among major players.

During the period from January to mid-May, Samsung Electronics marked a 631-percent growth in sales of dehumidifiers.LG Electronics, which has kept the No. 1 spot in the global dehumidifier market for seven straight years, also enjoyed a 250-percent growth in sales during the same period.

Among small- and medium-sized companies, Winix is also stepping up its marketing efforts in order to accomplish its goal of grabbing a 50-percent share in the domestic dehumidifier market. Winia Mando is also striving to catch up with frontrunners by releasing a brand-new low-noise and low-voltage dehumidifier.
