Hyundai Motor Joins Hands with Delphi to Develop Next-Generation Engine

SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Motor plans to have a field test for a next-generation gasoline engine in the second half of this year, aimed at starting mass-production from next year. This engine features more than a 25-percent improvement in fuel efficiency compared to existing models.

According to industry sources on June 1, Hyundai Motor plans to have a field test for the next-generation GDCI engine which will be used for New Sonata (code named LF), in the latter half of this year.

The field test will be conducted simultaneously at Hyundai Motor’s Namyang Research Center in Hwaseong in Gyeonggi Province, and at the Hyundai/Kia Technical Center in Detroit in Michigan.

The development of this engine has been carried out jointly by Hyundai Motor America and Delphi of the United States. Delphi is one of the world’s largest automotive parts makers. GDCI is an abbreviation of Gasoline Direct Compression Ignition.
