Shipments of Mobile DRAMs Exceed Those of PC DRAMs

SEOUL, KOREA - The share of mobile DRAMs which are used for smartphones and tablet computers exceeded that of DRAMs for personal computers.

According to a semiconductor e-trade site DRAM Exchange on June 9, the world’s DRAM shipments totaled 5,295 million units in the first quarter of this year, up 29 percent from 4,116 million units a year ago.

Of the total, mobile DRAMs accounted for 1,788 million units or 34 percent of the total, higher than PC DRAMs’ 1,650 million units or 31 percent.The shipments of mobile DRAMs marked a 50-percent jump compared to a year ago, but the growth of PC DRAMs remained relatively low at 10 percent.

The remainders include server DRAMs (992 million units, up 19% year on year), consumer DRAMs (470 million units, up 9%), and graphic DRAMs (396 million units, up 7%).

It was the third quarter of last year when the share of mobile DRAMs exceeded that of PC DRAMs first in history. On an annual basis, this year is expected to be the first year when the share of mobile DRAMs will surpass that of PC DRAMs.
