Samsung Electronics maintained its No. 1 spot in the DRAM market in the first quarter of this year. It has never lost the leading position since it took the No.1 spot first in 1992. If Samsung Electronics can maintain the lead in terms of market share this year, it could stay in that position for 23 consecutive years.

According to market research firm IHS iSupply, Samsung Electronics grabbed a share of 37.2 percent in the global DRAM market in the first quarter of this year, followed by SK Hynix with 27.8 percent. Micron Technology of the U.S. was positioned at No. 3 with a share of 26.9 percent.

The combined market share of the two Korean companies stood at 65 percent. Samsung Electronics’ first-quarter market share represented a 0.9 percentage point increase compared to a year ago but a 2.6 percentage points decline compared to a quarter ago.

Samsung Electronics’ DRAM sales amounted to $3.7 billion in the first quarter, followed by SK Hynix with $2.79 billion, and Micron with $2.70 billion.
