Samsung Electronics Overtaken by Xiaomi in China

SEOUL, KOREA - Xiaomi, known as the Apple Inc. of China, is ranked No. 1 in the Chinese smartphone market, overtaking Samsung Electronics.

According to American market research firm Canalys, Xiaomi grabbed a share of 14 percent in the Chinese smartphone market in the second quarter of this year, exceeding Samsung Electronics’ 12 percent.

Canalys did not disclose the sales volume of Xiaomi. If calculating based on the market share, however, Xiaomi is estimated to have sold about 15.2 million units during the period.Xiaomi, which had a share of 5 percent last year, achieved a 240-percent growth in China.

In the first quarter of this year, meanwhile, Samsung Electronics had a share of 18.3 percent, while Xiaomi 10.7 percent.

The popularity of Xiaomiis still limited to the Chinese market which accounted for 97 percent in Xiaomi’s total sales. The company plans to expand its presence toward other markets such as Indonesia, Mexico, and Russia.
