SEOUL, KOREA - The global semiconductor material market, which continued its growing momentum since the financial crisis in 2009, has started to sag for the first time in three years.
According to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI) on April 10th, the sales of the global semiconductor materials for production and packaging stood at USD 47. 011 billion last year, down 2% from the previous year. For the same period, the sales of the semiconductor in the world market dropped by 3%.
The markets of wafer manufacturing and packaging posted USD 23.38 billion and USD 23.74 billion in sales respectively last year. The sales of the wafer manufacturing market reached USD 24.22 billion and the packaging material market sales stood at USD 23.62 billion in 2011.
“It is noticeable that the size of the packaging material market surpassed that of the wafer manufacturing market for the first time last year. But the sharp drop in the sales of silicon material caused the total semiconductor material market to shrink.
Meanwhile, Taiwan, China and Korea posted growth in the market. In particular, Taiwan logged USD 10.032 billion thanks to a large-scale foundry of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), leading the world semiconductor material market. Since the European and North American markets are starting to go down, Japan posted a negative growth rate of 7%.
글로벌 반도체 소재시장 규모 3년 만에 하락
지난 2009년 금융위기 이래 성장세를 이어갔던 글로벌 반도체 소재시장이 3년 만에 감소세로 돌아섰다.
10일 국제반도체장비재료협회(SEMI)는 지난해 생산과 패키징을 위한 전 세계 반도체 소재시장이 470억1100만달러(약 53조6000억원)를 기록했다고 발표했다. 전년 대비 2% 감소한 금액이다. 같은 기간 세계 반도체 매출은 3% 하락했다.
전체 웨이퍼 제조와 패키징 시장은 각각 233억8000만달러와 237억4000만달러다. 2011년 웨이퍼 제조시장은 매출 242억2000만달러, 패키징 소재는 236억2000만달러다.
SEMI는 “패키징 소재 시장이 처음으로 웨이퍼 제조 소재 시장을 넘어섰다는 점을 주목할 만하다”며 “특히 실리콘 소재 매출이 급격히 줄어들면서 전체 반도체 소재시장이 축소됐다”고 설명했다.
지역별로는 대만과 중국, 한국이 성장했다. 대만은 TSMC 등 대형 파운드리에 힘입어 100억3200만달러를 기록, 세계 최대 소재시장 자리를 지켰다. 일본은 유럽과 북미시장이 위축되면서 7% 가까이 줄었다.
