SEOUL, KOREA - SK Hynix announced on August 7 that it held a new product launching event for its new CMOS image sensor in Shenzhen in China. A CMOS image sensor is a kind of system semiconductor, playing the role of realizing images in smartphone camera.

SK Hynix aims to expand its sales of the sensor targeting Chinese smartphone makers which are enjoying a rapid growth in recent days. This event attracted more than 300 representatives from 150 companies, including China’s major smartphone makers such as Huawei and ZTE.

In addition to the 13-megapixel CMOS image sensor which is used most widely for the latest smartphone models, SK Hynix also showcased a 21-megapixel model which is now under development.

Unlike the past when SK Hynix focused on low- and mid-price models, the company plans to make bigger forays into a high value-added CMOS image sensor market.

An SK Hynix official said, “We will strive to increase the sales of high-pixel products by applying the new light-concentrating technology onto 13-megapixel-plus CMOS image sensors.”
