Samsung Electronics Takes over SmartThings

Samsung Electronics announced on August 15 that it has acquired an AmericanInternet of Things open-type platform development company SmartThings.The acquisition price, however, is not disclosed but estimated at around $200 million by overseas media.

 

SmartThings’ open-type platform enables a single mobile application to monitor, control, and automate homes.This platform is connected with more than 1,000 devices and more than 8,000 apps.

 

SmartThings will belong to Samsung Electronics’ Open Innovation Center (OIC) which is located in Silicon Valley.

 

The headquarter office of SmartThings, which is now located in Washington, DC, will be relocated to Palo Alto in California.Alex Hawkinson, founder and CEO of SmartThings, will retain his job and run it independently from Samsung.
