Samsung Electronics boosted its market share in the global memory chip market in the second quarter of this year by spearheading the world's technology competition.

According to market research firm IHS iSuppli on August 18, Samsung Electronics saw its memory chip sales reach $6.7 billion in the second quarter of this year, up 14.2 percent from a quarter ago.

Samsung's global market share increased up to 34.7 percent in the second quarter, a 2.3 percentage point increase compared to the last quarter’s 32.4 percent. Samsung, accordingly, maintained its No. 1 spot worldwide.

The increase in Samsung's market share is attributable to the increased share of state-of-the-art products such as 20-nm DRAM products and vertical structure NAND flash memories in its overall sales.

Samsung Electronics' DRAM sales amounted to $4.3 billion in the second quarter of this year, up 15.3 percent compared to a quarter ago, while its sales of NAND flash memories grew 14.3 percent to $2.38 billion.
