Seoul, Korea - According to Horace Dediu, an expert analyst on Apple-related issues, Apple’s share in global PC sales during the last fourth quarter was mere 5%, but its share of operating income was 45% of all PC makers.
Dell recorded a 13% share in operating income to place itself in the second place. The same shares of HP, Lenovo, ASUS and other makers reached only 6 to 7%.
Dediu compared Apple against Dell, citing Apple’s 18.9% average operating income ratio, while that of Dell was only 4%. The average operating incomes of HP, Lenovo and Acer are even lower than that of Dell. The operating income Apple reaped from Mac sales during the last fourth Quarter was greater than the total net income of top 5 PC makers, including HP, Dell, ASUS, Acer and Lenovo.
Apple’s operating income per PC went past the USD 240 mark in the last fourth quarter, while those of the other top 5 makers came short of USD 60.
Dediu commented, “Apple’s share of operating income in the PC market is not as large as that of the mobile market, but it is still not too bad. While the PC makers are stuck with a low-profitability structure, Apple had made a whopping success with its own hardware and services.”

17일 포천 등 외신은 호레이스 데듀 IT 전문 애널리스트가 시장조사업체 아심코(Asymco)에 게재한 글을 인용해 “애플은 지난해 4분기 세계 PC 시장에서 매출 5%에 불과하지만 45%의 영업이익을 가져갔다”고 밝혔다. 지난해 4분기 델은 13%의 영업이익을 내 애플의 뒤를 이었다. HP, 레노버, 아수스 등은 6~7% 수준에 그쳤다.
데듀는 애플이 맥 판매에서 평균 18.9%의 영업이익을 기록했다며 평균치가 4%에 불과한 델과 비교했다. HP, 레노버, 에이서의 평균 영업이익은 델 보다 더 낮다. 지난해 4분기 애플의 맥 영업이익을 더하면 HP, 델, 아수스 에이서, 레노버 등 상위 5개 PC 기업 순익 총액보다 많다. 애플의 지난해 4분기 PC 제품 당 영업이익은 240달러(약 26만7000원)를 넘어섰으며, 다른 상위 5개 기업들은 60달러(약 6만6000원)에도 못 미친다.
데듀는 “PC 시장의 애플 영업이익 점유율이 모바일 시장에서 만큼은 아니지만 나쁘지 않다”며 “근본적인 문제는 PC 공급자들의 오랜 기간 지속돼 온 저수익 구조가 빛을 바랜 자리에 애플이 자체 기기 경쟁력과 콘텐츠 장터 및 서비스로 침투하고 있다는 점”이라고 말했다.
