SEOUL, KOREA - President Park met Bill Gates, the founder of MS, on the 22nd to discuss how to foster creativity and realize the creative economy.
“In order to overcome the global economic crisis, science and ICT, a business and a business and a business and culture should be converged to make more jobs and to change the economic fundamentals, placing creativity as the core value of the economy. It is also important to create a startup-friendly environment,” said the President.
“The President is very wise to stress the importance of creativity. As Korea has a good quality education system, well-established infrastructures and world-renowned companies, what the government has to think about is the direction for it to lead the economy. And R&D, venture capital and the government support are needed for large-scale projects to enhance entrepreneurship and to make a creative innovation. And R&D on basic science sectors shouldn’t be underestimated,” responded Bill Gates.
The President and the former Chairman of MS also pointed out the importance of nurturing talented people for the creative economy.
박 대통령·빌 게이츠 "창조경제로 경제체제 바꿔야"
박근혜 대통령과 빌 게이츠 마이크로소프트(MS) 창업자가 22일 처음 만나 창의성을 촉진하고 기술 융합으로 창조경제를 구현해야 한다는 데 공감했다.
박 대통령은 이날 청와대에서 빌 게이츠 미국 테라파워 회장을 접견하고 창조경제와 정부 역할, 원자력기술 분야 협력 등 의견을 나눴다. 박 대통령은 “글로벌 경제위기를 헤쳐가려면 창의성을 경제 핵심 가치로 두고 과학기술·정보통신기술(ICT), 산업과 산업, 산업과 문화 융합으로 일자리를 만들고 경제체제를 바꿔야 한다”고 강조했다.
또 “미국은 MS와 구글 등 새로운 기업이 나와 역동성을 유지하고 성장을 계속한다. 위험을 감수하고 창업할 수 있는 기회를 확대하는 것이 중요하다”며 환경 조성에 필요한 정부 역할을 물었다.
빌 게이츠 회장은 “(박 대통령이) 창조성을 강조하는 것은 매우 현명한 판단”이라며 “한국은 좋은 교육 시스템과 교육의 질, 인프라, 세계적 수준의 대기업 등 출발점은 잘 갖춰져 있으므로 어디로 나갈 것인지 고민하면 될 것”이라고 답했다.
또 “기업가 정신을 계발하고 창조적 혁신이 함께 이뤄지려면 연구개발(R&D)과 벤처캐피털을 장려하고 대형 프로젝트에 정부 지원이 필요하다”며 “특히 의학과 컴퓨터 등 기초과학 분야 정부 R&D를 평가절하해서는 안 된다”고 강조했다.
인재 양성에도 공감대를 이뤘다. 박 대통령은 “창조경제에서 핵심은 사람으로 획일적 교육시스템보다는 창의성 있는 인재로 키워나가는 시스템이 중요하다”고 역설했다. 게이츠 회장은 “최고 강사가 다방면의 사람을 교육할 수 있는 기회가 확대돼야 하고 즉시 피드백을 가능하게 하는 기술과 교육 접목 분야가 성장 잠재력이 있다”고 말했다.
앞서 빌 게이츠 회장은 이날 최문기 미래창조과학부 장관과 윤상직 산업통상자원부 장관을 잇따라 만나 차세대 원전인 진행파 원자로(TWR) 개발 협력 및 창조경제 실현 방안 등을 논의했다.
