SEOUL, KOREA - The free trade agreement (FTA) between Korea and Turkey is going to take effect as of May 1st. Tariffs imposed on color TVs and fridges will be gradually lifted within 7 and 5 years respectively.
According to the announcement made by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the FTA between the two nations would increase trade by USD 630 million for the next five years.
The FTA is aiming to abolish the customs duties on all products within ten years. Based on the amount of imports, Korea will lift tariffs on 99.6% of the products while its counterpart is to abolish all of the customs duties.
The tariffs on medium and large-sized cars that are considered to be main products exported to Turkey will be lifted five years after the FTA goes into effect. As for small-sized cars with 1600㏄ or less, a non-lineal tariff elimination method will be applied for seven years.
Before the FTA becomes effective, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a meeting to check how to implement the FTA at Ankara, Turkey on the 24th. In particular, the textile and clothing products are not subjected to Turkish tariffs as of the 1st of May.

한국과 터키 자유무역협정(FTA)이 1일 발효된다. 컬러TV는 7년 내, 냉장고는 5년 내에 단계적으로 관세가 철폐된다.
30일 산업통상자원부에 따르면 한·터키 FTA 기본협정과 상품무역협정이 1일 발효돼 향후 5년간 6억3000만달러 교역 증대 효과가 예상된다.
한·터키 FTA는 사실상 전 품목의 관세를 10년 내 철폐하는 것이 골자다. 우리나라는 수입액 기준 99.6%, 터키는 100% 품목의 관세를 없앤다.
대터키 주요 수출 품목인 자동차 가운데 중·대형 승용차는 협정 발효 후 5년 내 관세를 철폐한다. 1600㏄ 이하 소형 자동차는 7년 비선형 관세철폐 방식이 적용된다.
정보기술(IT) 품목 중에서는 컬러TV와 냉장고 관세가 각각 7년, 5년 내에 철폐된다. 가장 많이 수출하는 LCD와 무선통신기기 관세는 즉시 철폐되나 이미 무관세 품목이어서 추가로 발생하는 효과는 없다.
산업부는 한·터키 FTA 발효를 앞두고 지난 24일 터키 앙카라에서 FTA 이행점검회의를 개최했다. 우리 섬유·의류 제품의 터키 수출 시 애로사항이었던 터키 측 산업보호관세를 1일부로 한국산에 적용하지 않는 것을 확인했다.
산업부는 한·터키 FTA 서비스 무역 및 투자협정도 1년 내에 체결한다는 목표로 추가 협상을 진행할 계획이다.
