SEOUL, KOREA - Both the production and export of cars dropped last month, while the domestic demand went up.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on May 9, the local automobile production (386,446 units) and export (261,501 units) decreased by 2.5% and 5.6% last month, compared with the same month of the previous yearrespectively.
Behind such drops in the production and export lie reduced working hours as workers from major car makers are not willing to work overtime during weekends, sluggish demand in the EU market and intensified global competition due to the weak yen.
Hyundai and Kia failed to narrow down differences with their labors on working overtime during weekends. And the EU automobile market had been sluggish for 18 months in a row until the end of March.
The drops in the production and export last month considerably decreased compared with the previous month. The car production improved a lot last month from the month before when it dropped by 13.1%. And the export went up by more than 10%P from the 16% drop made in the previous month.
Meanwhile, the domestic car demand increased again for the first time in three months thanks to the effect of new local cars and the upswing in the imported car market. The number of cars sold locally was 132,938, up 3% from the same period of the previous year.In particular, the imported car market posted a monthly record high in the sales (13,320 units) last month.

지난달 자동차 생산과 수출이 동반 감소한 가운데, 내수 시장은 상승세로 반전했다.
산업통상자원부는 지난달 자동차 생산(38만6446대)과 수출(26만1501대)이 작년 같은 기간보다 각각 2.5%, 5.6% 감소했다고 9일 밝혔다.
생산과 수출이 감소한 것은 조업일수 증가에도 불구하고 주요 업체의 주말 특근 미실시로 인한 근로시간 단축, EU 시장의 수요 위축, 엔저로 인한 글로벌 경쟁 심화 따른 것으로 풀이된다.
현대·기아차는 주말 특근 형태에 대한 노사 협의 장기화로 3월에 이어 4월에도 주말 특근을 실시하지 못했다. EU 자동차 시장도 올 3월까지 18개월 연속 감소세를 이어가고 있다.
하지만 생산, 수출 감소폭은 전달에 비해 크게 줄어들었다. 생산의 경우, 전달 13.1% 감소에서 크게 개선됐다. 수출 감소폭도 전달 16%에서 10%포인트 이상 개선됐다.
내수 시장은 국산 신차 효과와 수입차 선전에 힘입어 3개월 만에 증가세로 전환됐다. 지난달 내수 시장은 총 13만2938대로 작년 같은 기간보다 3.0% 성장했다. 쌍용차 코란도 투리스모와기아차카렌스, 현대차맥스크루즈 등이 수요 증가를 이끌었다. 특히 월간 사상 최대(1만3320대)를 기록한 수입차 성장세가 두드러졌다.
