SEOUL, KOREA - Crown Confectionery announced on May 20 that it has won Halal certifications for its four snack items, including C Corn Chip, Jollypong, and Caramel Corn & Peanuts, from the Singapore Muis Halal.
The Halal certification is needed to export food items to Islamic countries. The Singapore Muis Halal awarded by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore is one of the world's three most renowned Halal certification organizations, together with Malaysia's Jakim and Indonesia's MUI.
This is the first time among Korea's confectionery makers to win a Halal certification. Starting from early July 2013, Crown plans to start exporting the four snacks first to Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, and, later to Muslim communities in the United States and Europe.
According to AT Kearny, a management consultancy, the size of the world's Halal market is estimated at about US$2 trillion. Of the total, food and beverage account for about $1.4 trillion or 67 percent of the total.
