SEOUL, KOREA - In a popular US TV quiz show, ‘Jeopardy!’, IBM’s artificial intelligent computer, ‘Watson’, won over a human being. Korea has a plan to develop an AI computer just like ‘Watson’ in four years. By the year of 2020, another AI SW that would support decisions made by legal, medical and/or financial experts would have been developed as well.
The Ministry of Future Creation and Science announced on May 28 that it would begin developing ‘Exobrain’ SW that would work as artificial bran with the ability to communicate with people. The government is going to put KRW 107 billion (the government is to fund KRW 80 billion and the rest KRW 27 billion will be raised by the private sector.) into a three-staged project until the year of 2023.
At the first stage that will be implemented until Aril, 2017, the development of generic technology on ‘Exobrain’ SW that would analyze common knowledge will be carried out. 366 people from 26 research institutes including ETRI, Saltlux, KAIST and POSTECH are going to participate in the project. And the following stage will be conducted until April, 2020 to develop Exobrain SW application technologies that would collaborate in reasoning expert knowledge. And the last stage will be carried out from May, 2020 to April, 2023 to commercialize Exobrain SW technology that would address global expert knowledge.
The Ministry is expecting that it would catch up with ‘Watson’ by 2017 when the first stage of the project is completed. From the second stage, it is planning to develop the world’s best AI technology that could learn and obtain knowledge by itself.
The Ministry says that the reason for putting forth the project is to enhance the future competitiveness of the nation and domestic companies as a fierce global competition in the AI SW sector is expected.
미래부, 1070억 투입 `인공지능 SW` 개발
지난 2011년 미국의 인기 퀴즈 프로그램 제퍼디에서 IBM의 인공지능 컴퓨터 `왓슨(Watson)`은 사람을 물리치고 우승을 차지했다. 4년 후에는 우리나라에서도 왓슨과 같은 컴퓨터가 개발된다. 2020년에는 법률·의료·금융 전문가 의사결정을 지원하는 인공지능 소프트웨어(SW)도 만들어진다.
미래창조과학부는 사람과 의사소통 가능한 인체 외부의 인공두뇌를 의미하는 `엑소브레인(Exobrain·외뇌)` SW 개발에 착수한다고 28일 밝혔다. 2023년까지 1070억원(정부 800억원, 민간 270억원)을 투입해 총 3단계(4년·3년·3년)에 걸쳐 사업을 추진한다.
2017년 4월까지 진행되는 1단계 사업에서는 `일반지식 대상 분석형 엑소브레인 SW 기반기술 개발`이 추진된다. 한국전자통신연구원(ETRI), 솔트룩스, KAIST, 포스텍 등 연간 26개 연구기관 366명의 인원이 사업에 참여한다. 사업비는 428억원이다. 이어 2020년 4월까지 2단계로 `전문지식 대상 협업추론형 엑소브레인 SW 응용기술 개발`이 추진된다.
미래부는 엑소브레인 프로젝트 1단계가 종료되는 2017년에는 왓슨의 기술을 따라잡을 수 있을 것으로 전망했다. 2단계부터는 컴퓨터 스스로의 지식학습을 통해 세계 최고 수준의 지능 진화형 기술을 개발한다.
미래부는 고비용·고위험 분야인 인공지능 SW 분야에서 글로벌 경쟁이 본격화될 것으로 예상하고 국가와 기업 미래 경쟁력 강화를 위해 이번 사업을 추진한다고 밝혔다. 다양한 분야에서 정부가 추구하는 창조경제의 토양이 되는 지식활용이 확대될 것으로 기대했다.
안창용 미래부 소프트웨어융합과장은 “엑소브레인 SW는 기업·공공 분야 경영자, 의료·법률 전문가의 의사결정과 사회현상 분석·예측에 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 말했다.
