SEOUL, KOREA – An angel investors’ club comprised of foreigners is to be formed to make investment in Korean start-ups and venture firms. Though foreign angel investors have so far directly invested in domestic companies, creating an angel investors’ club is unprecedented. Growing expectations of the future development of home-grown start-ups and expansion of government support seemed to have played a role.
Korea Angel Investor Association (hereafter referred to as KAIA) said Tuesday that an angel investors’ club consisting of 20 foreign investors will be granted membership of KAIA this month. These 20 foreign investors are known to have not only funds but also ample expertise and investment experiences. A member of the angel investors’ club said,” I have thus far invested in Korean start-ups in a direct manner, but I decided to form an angel club in order to build a professional network and gain access to a wide range of investment information.”
Formation of a foreign angel club is expected to assist Korean start-ups in making forays into overseas markets since theses foreign angel investors, well-versed in their domestic markets, can offer Korean start-ups timely consultations on overseas market entry.

국내 스타트업•벤처만 투자 '외국인 엔젤투자클럽'생긴다
국내 스타트업과 벤처에만 투자하는 `외국인` 엔젤투자클럽이 만들어진다. 그동안 해외 엔젤이 직접 투자하는 사례는 있었지만 별도 투자클럽을 결성해 한국에 기반을 두고 활동하는 사례는 처음이다. `토종` 스타트업 경쟁력에 기대감이 커지면서 `우수 투자처`가 늘고 있는데다 정부 지원도 확대되고 있기 때문이다.
28일 한국엔젤투자협회에 따르면 교포 등 해외 국적을 가진 20여명 멤버가 엔젤클럽을 결성해 이달 회원으로 등록한다. 이들은 단순히 `자금`만 있는 것이 아니라 전문 지식과 투자 경험이 풍부한 전문 엔젤인 것으로 알려졌다. 엔젤클럽 회원 중 한 명은 “개인적으로 한국 스타트업에 투자했지만 전문적인 네트워크를 구축하고 다양한 정보를 얻기 위해 클럽을 결성하기로 했다”고 밝혔다.
`해외파` 엔젤클럽이 결성되면서 스타트업의 해외 진출도 한결 수월해질 전망이다. 이들은 자국은 물론이고 협회 지원으로 인해 두 나라 제반 사정에 밝아 적시에 컨설팅까지 가능할 것으로 보인다. 창업 초기 단계부터 글로벌화를 고민해야 하는 지금에 적합한 투자자인 것. 게다가 국가 간 엔젤 네트워크 구축으로 제3국 시장 진출도 도울 수 있다. 업계는 부족한 초기 단계 투자 자금을 충원할 수 있다는 기대감이 커지고 있다.
이런 배경에는 중소기업청이 지난 15일 발표한 `벤처 창업 자금 생태계 선순환 방안`이 크게 작용했다. 정부는 해외 동포가 국내 스타트업 엔젤 투자자로 활동하면 국내 엔젤투자자와 동일하게 엔젤 매칭 펀드에서 지원한다고 명시했다. 그만큼 차별을 두지 않겠다는 것. 게다가 엔젤투자 소득공제 비율을 50%로 확대한 것도 클럽 결성에 힘을 실어줬다.
고영하 한국엔젤투자협회장은 “실리콘밸리 투자 대부분이 엔젤클럽이 중심인 데 비해 한국은 아직 엔젤투자가 300억원에 불과해 활성화가 미진하다”며 “이런 상황에서 해외 기업가들이 클럽을 결성해 투자를 결심한 것은 의미가 크다”고 말했다. 그러면서 “앞으로 많은 엔젤클럽이 생겨 한국 스타트업 생태계가 활기를 띨 수 있기를 희망한다”고 덧붙였다.
