SEOUL, KOREA - GE Healthcare will invest 10 billion won to double its capacity of ultrasound systems in Korea. The company held a press conference on May 30 at the Plaza Hotel and said it would expand the scale of the production facility run by GE Ultrasound in Seongnam, south of Seoul. To that end, a new six-story building will be put up right next to the current production plant by February next year.

GE Ultrasound is now producing an average of 15,000 ultrasound systems a year. The Korean unit accounts for about a third of all ultrasound devices produced globally by GE Healthcare. As much as 95 percent of the output at the Seongnam plant is exported to 160 countries worldwide.

Choi Young-chun, president of GE Ultrasound, said, "The rate of domestic parts usage in our plant is approaching 100 percent thanks to excellent support by 120 small-sized Korean suppliers. The latest announcement of investment is proof that our plant is recognized widely as a quality producer with excellence in R&D capabilities."
