SEOUL, KOREA - Lotte Mart, Korea's major discount retail store chain, is leading an initiative to save electricity. The company said on June 4 it would implement an energy saving campaign by reducing the speed of its moving walks and replacing sliding glass doors on refrigerated displays.

In 72 stores throughout the country the company has reduced the moving walk speed by 10 percent from the 4th. It is estimated the company could save about 30 percent of energy, or 10 million kilowatts a year, from the measure. With the installation of sliding doors on its refrigerators, it can save another 65 million kW a year. In addition, the company has installed motion sensors in warehouses so that the lights are turned on only when workers are present.

In addition to all that, Lotte Mart stores are generating their own electricity through solar power panels. Beginning with the Pyeongtaek location in 2009, 39 stores are now running photovoltaic panels on their rooftops or empty lots, producing 4.6 million kW of electric power.
