SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung has announced that it will put on its first global developers conference in San Francisco on October 27-29, 2013, joining other global tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Apple. Such a move came as Samsung refuses to remain simply a manufacturer and tries to entrench itself as one of the world's platform leaders by spreading the realm of Samsung’s ecosystem and luring in more developers.
According to TechCrunch, Samsung Electronics’ first developers conference will take place in San Francisco at the West St. Francis Hotel in Union Square from October 27 through 29.
Samsung Electronics’ first developers’ conference is expected to offer developers have access to a wide range of information on the development of Samsung’s various products, from smartphones and smart TVs to cameras.
For Samsung, this is a big step in terms of differentiating itself from other Android developers on the mobile front. Google already offers the opportunity for developers on its mobile OS to get together and see workshops and sessions, but these are device agnostic, and in fact cater more to developers who aren’t interested in one type of handset over another, according to TechCrunch.
Samsung also appears increasingly to be interested in building out its other divisions, and recently snapped up media streaming and cloud DVR startup Boxee to help it boost its smart TV efforts, TechCrunch reported.

테크크런치는 삼성전자가 10월 27일부터 29일까지 사흘간 미국 샌프란시스코 웨스틴 프랜시스호텔에서 `제1회 삼성 개발자 콘퍼런스`를 개최한다고 보도했다.
구글, 애플 본사 앞마당인 샌프란시스코를 택했다. 하드웨어에 이어 소프트웨어 개발에 자신감을 드러내려는 의도로 풀이된다. 삼성이란 이름을 전면에 내세우고 사흘간 유료로 개최하는 개발자 콘퍼런스는 이번이 처음이다. 삼성전자는 바다 플랫폼 데이를 열거나 모바일 월드 콩그레스(MWC)에서 작은 규모로 하루짜리 개발자 행사만 했다. 행사는 홍원표 사장이 이끄는 미디어솔루션센터가 주도한다.
삼성 개발자 콘퍼런스는 스마트폰뿐만 아니라 스마트TV, 카메라 등 모든 삼성 기기와 관련한 개발 정보를 망라할 전망이다. 삼성전자는 이 행사로 다른 안드로이드 제조사와 차별화를 꾀한다. 구글 I/O는 최신 안드로이드 개발 정보를 얻을 수 있지만 단말기마다 특화된 노하우는 부족하다.
세계 스마트폰 시장 1위인 삼성전자는 자사 단말기에 가장 잘 맞는 개발 정보를 제공한다. 삼성전자는 안드로이드를 사용하지만 `터치위즈` 등 자체적으로 개발한 기술도 있다. 삼성전자만의 독특한 플랫폼에서 앱 개발을 보다 쉽고 빠르게 할 수 있는 방법 등을 공유하는 자리다. 특히, 9월 유럽 최대 가전쇼 `IFA`에서 공개할 `갤럭시 노트3` 소프트웨어개발도구(SDK) 등을 공개하며 노트 특화 앱도 확충한다. 타이젠 관련 세션도 준비 중이다.
삼성전자는 이 행사로 스마트TV와 카메라 등 다른 기기 생태계도 넓힌다. 삼성은 최근 미디어 스트리밍 및 클라우드 DVR 스타트업 `박시(Boxee)`를 인수하는 등 SW와 서비스 확산에 주력 중이다.
삼성전자 관계자는 “삼성전자만의 특화된 개발 노하우를 원하는 수요가 늘어났다”며 “구글 I/O와 애플 WWDC와 같은 개발자 축제로 만들 것”이라고 말했다.
