A rechargeable energy storage system is a system that stores energy for delivery of power and which is rechargeable. The device can be used in conjunction with solar and wind power generators to make their electricity supply more stable throughout the day even in nighttime or when the wind is not strong enough.
With the latest deal, Samsung SDI will deliver a 10-MWh ESS system for S&C Electric in partnership with Germany's Younicos AG. The system will be installed in Leighton Buzzard, a town 69 kilometers northwest of London, by July next year.
Samsung SDI has invested ambitiously in the ESS area since 2010 with an expectation that the market would grow rapidly within a few years. The world's ESS market in 2012 was US$400 million, but is forecast to grow to $19.3 billion by 2020.
