SEOUL, KOREA- Asiana Airlines said on August 1 that it has opened a second aircraft hangar in Woonseo-dong near Incheon International Airport. With a total cost of 170 billion won for more than two year, the 40,604-square-meter aviation shed for maintenance and repair is capable of accommodating two large airplanes (such as the Boeing 747-400 or Airbus A380) and a small-sized one at the same time.
With the completion of the hangar, the airliner said, it will be able to save up to US$16 million in major repair costs. In addition, the company can save an additional cost of $4 million a year in fuel and airspace charges as the new facility can do away with the need for carrying aircraft overseas.
The company expects that the new hangar can improve maintenance productivity by 10 percent as the machinists could get parts and supplies more quickly from nearby parts storage spaces. Asiana Airlines will hire 100 additional maintenance workers for the new hangar facility.
