Price Competition Heats up in UHD TV Market

Thursday, August 29th, 2013
SEOUL, KOREA- Price competition between Samsung Electronics and Sony is heating up in the US UHD TV market, with the price of UHD TV falling to below US$4,000.According to the U.S. consumer journal Consumer Report on August 28, Samsung Electronics cut the price of its 55-inch UHD TV to less than $4,000 in the US, and that for a 65-inch model to less than $5,500. They had been sold at a price of $5,500 and $7,500 one month ago.

Sony also reduced its UHD TV prices to the level similar to those of Samsung Electronics. Sony is now selling its 55-inch UHD TV at a price of less than $4,000, which stood at $5,000 and a 65-inch model at a price of $5,500, a sharp decline from $7,000.

This price competition is part of their efforts to preempt the market ahead of the opening of the UHD broadcasting era which will come in one or two years. Market research firm DisplaySearch predicted that the world’s UHD TV market will mark about a four-fold jump by 2014 from this year’s 983,000 units.
