Korean-made Large Sedans Overtaken by German Rivals

SEOUL, KOREA - Germany’stop-three premium auto brands—BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi—enjoyed a rapid growth in sales of their flagship models. The sales of premium models exceeded those of Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors.

According to industry sources on November 25, the combined sales of the premium German cars, including BMW 5 series, Mercedes-Benz E Class, and Audi A6, which played a key role in the growth of import car sales in Korea, were larger than the combined figures of Hyundai Motor’s Genesis, Equus, and Kia Motors’ K9.

During the January-October period of this year, A6 (four trims, including 3.0-liter TDI)was sold 6,719 units, 520d and 528 (including 4WD X Drive) 11,605 units,E-Class (four models, including E220 CDI and E300) 10,392 units, respectively.

Their sales totaled 28,716 units, higher than the total sales of Equus (11,190units), Genesis (10,264 units) and K9 (4,497 units). In other words, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors were defeated by German rivals in sales of flagship models.
