
SEOUL, KOREA - Hyundai Motor saw its market share fall in both the United States and Europe.
According to data on annual car sales in the EU, released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, Hyundai Motor sold 408,154 cars in Europe last year, down 2.2 percent from the previous year’s 417,256 units.
In particular, Hyundai Motor saw its sales and market share decline in Europe, first in five years since 2008. Its European market share stood at 3.4 percent last year, down 0.1 percentage point from a year ago.
The number of new cars registered in the EU’s 27 countries last year totaled 11.85 million units, down 1.7 percent year on year. Major car makers suffered a negative growth there, with Volkswagen Group marking a negative growth of 1.7 percent, Peugeot-Citroen 8.4 percent, GM 4.3 percent, and Ford 3.2 percent.
Even in the U.S. where Hyundai Motor enjoyed steady growth since the global financial crisis in 2008, the car maker marked a 2.5-percent growth in sales to 720,000 units but its market share fell by 0.3 percentage point from 4.9 percent in 2012 to 4.6 percent.
