SEOUL, KOREA – As Samsung Electronics last month introduced one of the Galaxy S4’s key functions, S-Translator, translation apps have drawn much attention. S-Translator is a translator app on the Galaxy S4 that understands 9 different languages in either text-to-speech or speech-to-text mode. S-Translator is also embedded in ChatOn (Samsung’s own-branded VoIP application), Messaging, and email. This app will help tourists out whilst they are on vacation.
For those who wish to use such a translation app without buying a Galaxy S4, mobile app developer Diotek has unveiled DioVoice (a speech recognition translation app for travelers). DioVoice can translate both written and spoken words into English and Japanese.
There is also “Genie Talk,” a translation app developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) as part of government-led national database building projects.
Genie Talk, which currently covers Korean-English translations, will expand to Japanese and Chinese this year and then to a total of eight languages including Spanish, French, German and Russian before the hosting of Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

갤럭시S4 S트랜스레이터 기능 지금 내폰에서도 쓴다
스마트폰으로 언어의 장벽을 없애는 통•번역 애플리케이션이 주목받고 있다.
지난달 삼성전자가 차세대 전략 스마트폰 `갤럭시S4` 핵심 기능으로 `S트랜스레이터`를 소개하며 관련 서비스에 관심이 뜨겁다.
S트랜스레이터는 한국어로 스마트폰에 이야기하면 원하는 국가 언어로 자동 통역해준다. S트랜스레이터는 챗온이나 이메일, 메시지와 연동해 텍스트를 번역한다. 여행 시 길을 물어보거나 음식점에서 주문할 때 유용하게 사용할 수 있다.
이 같은 기능을 갤럭시S4를 사지 않고 현재 사용하고 있는 스마트폰에서 사용할 수는 없을까.
디오텍이 개발한 자동 통역 애플리케이션 `디오보이스`는 S트랜스레이터를 대체하는 서비스다.
디오보이스는 한국어를 일어와 영어로 자동 통역해준다. 단말 내장형과 온라인용 두 가지로 지원돼 네트워크 접속 상태에 따라 선택할 수 있다.
김영찬 디오텍 상무는 “디오보이스는 여행 분야에 특화한 통역 앱으로 한국어, 일어, 영어를 자동 통역한다”며 “각 언어를 음성인식하고 발음(TTS)을 지원한다”고 설명했다.
한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)이 개발한 `지니톡`도 있다. 지니톡은 행정안전부와 한국정보화진흥원이 국가 데이터베이스(DB) 구축사업 일환으로 다년간 지원한 `다국어 음성언어 DB 구축` 사업의 결과물이다.
지니톡은 현재 영어 통역서비스를 지원하는데 올해 일본어와 중국어 통역 서비스로 확대한다. 2018년 평창 동계올림픽까지 스페인어, 불어, 독일어, 러시아어 등 총 8개 국어 자동통역 서비스를 완료할 계획이다.
박상규 ETRI 자동통역지식처리연구센터장은 “실제 여행 상황에서 통역률은 80%를 웃도는 수준으로 구글의 한•영 자동통역기술 65%에 비해 15% 포인트정도 높다”며 “올해 안에 해외에서도 지니톡을 사용할 수 있도록 할 것”이라고 말했다.
