Import Car Sales Up 31% in February

SEOUL, KOREA - The sales of import cars rose 31 percent in February 2014, led by German brands such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, and Audi.According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association on March 6, the number of import cars newly registered last month totaled 13,852 units, up 31.2 percent year on year.

The February figure, however, is down 6.7 percent compared to the previous month’s 14,953.AKAIDA official said, “Last month’s import car sales marked a negative growth compared to a month ago, due to the decline in the number of sales days and the shortage of supply by some brands.”

By brand, BMW came on top with 3,154 units, followed by Benz with 2,631 units, Audi with 2,187 units, and Volkswagen with 2,104 units.The best-selling model was BMW 520d which was sold 702 units, followed by Volkswagen Golf 2.0 TDI with 622 units, Benz E220 CDI with 542 units, and Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI Blue Motion with 539 units.

The top-four German brands sold 10,086 units, with their combined market share estimated at 72.8 percent. In contrast, the market share of Japanese brands fell to 11.4 percent in February from 15.6 percent in January.
