SEOUL, KOREA - German brands are vying fiercely to get the top spot in the Korean import car market where Japanese brands are on the wane.

Among the top-20 import car models in terms of sales volume in Korea for the period from January to February 2014, there was only one Japanese model—Lexus ES300h. Excluding Ford’s SUV Explorer, all of the remaining models were German brands made by BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association on March 10, the best-selling import car model was BMW 520d which was sold 1,511 units during the first two months of this year. The BMW 520d was the largest-selling import car model for 2013. With excellent design and superior fuel efficiency and performance, the BMW 520d solidified its leading position.

The Audi A6 series also made a great stride. The A6 3.0 TDI Quattro, which ranked No. 6 last year, moved up by one notch to No. 5 in the January-February period of this year, while the A6 2.0 TDI, which ranked No. 9 last year, rose to No. 6. The combined sales of these two models stood at 1,645 units, higher than those of BMW 520d.
