Coupang Acquires U.S. Technology Company CalmSea

SEOUL, KOREA - Coupang, one of Korea’s leading social commerce companies, announced on May 15 that it has acquired a U.S. technology company CalmSea Inc. The Mountain View (Calif.)-based company is a specialist in establishment and development of large-scale database systems, distribution optimization, big data analysis, and e-commerce and CRM applications.

CalmSea has worked together with a handful of global household names such as Disney, Puma, Lenovo, and Barclay Card.

Located in Silicon Valley, CalmSea will be used as Coupang’s U.S. office. Coupang developers will go to Silicon Valley where they will carry out educational programs and conferences to promote direct exchanges with their counterparts at CalmSea.

James H. Dai, CEO of CalmSea, will continue to work there as CTO. He has had 30 years of experienceat global IT firms, with specialty in database setup, software development, operations and management.

ACoupang official said, “With this acquisition, we will provide differentiated services to our customers, using our world-class technological expertise.”
